I am interested in your solutions to the old Celko puzzle,
but you have overlooked one constraint: The query is for Oracle. I have no idea
how Mr. Pascal's solution would be translated into Oracle SQL given that
languages syntax. I would like to see both of your solutions written in
SQL*Plus or PL/SQL.

Well, that's a very different kind of constraint--much more
limiting, I would say. :)
Neither Chris, nor I follow products anymore--they give us
ulcers--and besides it's not always entirely clear whether an operation that is
perfectly reasonable in practice can be expressed in SQL in general, or in a
particular product dialect in particular. We can offer the correct general
solution to the problem and leave practitioners to figure out whether their
product can do it (and how) or not. That is also a good way to help them focus
on the weaknesses of the products relative to the proper solutions.
We suggest you try to solve the puzzle in Oracle and let us
know your conclusions, which, if interesting, we will be glad to post.
