Oracle allows any many joins views to be intrinsically
updateable (8i). In addition, any view to be made updateable through the
definition of INSTEAD-OF triggers. I agree that there are limited means of
defining table semantics to propagate to views, but I'm not sure that you're
completely fair critiquing Oracle here. What's the current list of deficiencies
of Oracle as regards whether or not it's "relational"?

Where did I criticize Oracle????
The very article you react to explains why views are not
properly updatable in SQL--reread it and ponder why those limitations
exist, and if they are necessary, and if they make life easier or harder.
I have written three books and numerous articles documenting
and explaining this and so did Chris Date--if you read them you'll find the
answer to your question, including why triggers are not the correct solution to
integrity enforcement.
