I have self-learned parts of MySQL and other proprietary DB
ware. My professional experience has involved a fair bit of database analysis
& design, but not to a deeply technical level. I want to orient my career
in this direction, particularly the on-line arena. I know I have great
analytical and organizational skills, but no certificates to prove it. So, the
question is, can you recommend what DB packages I might focus on, and what
kinds of courses are suitable? The goal being to be attractive to appropriate
employers.

I've recommended AN INTRODUCTION TO DATABASE
SYSTEMS and PRACTICAL
ISSUES IN DATABASE MANAGEMENT. Hopefully he'll read them!

Good, although you forgot the PRACTICAL
DATABASE FOUNDATIONS papers which, in the long run, will
replace the books.
Unfortunately, foundation knowledge is not what's gonna get
him a job. Product knowledge will. That's the reality.
